Forklift Safety Training
OSHA’s new forklift safety training rule for lift truck operators was finalized on December 1, 1998.
Objectives of the training include:
- Identify the types of forklifts;
- Identify forklift pre-operation and inspection forklift procedures
- Identify safe practices for:
- Safe forklift driving
- Safe load handling
- Safe forklift refueling
- Explain and demonstrate the principles of the stability triangle and safe driving
The “L” Paragraph of the New OSHA Regulation (Standards – 29 CFR) – 1910.178 that clearly defines the responsibility of the employer with regards to forklift safety training.
Employers shall ensure that initial training and evaluation are completed:
- Before 1 December 1999 if the employee is hired before 1 December 1999;
- Before the employee is assigned to operate a powered a powered industrial truck if the employee is hired after 1 December 1999.
In addition, it is a violation of the Federal law:
- For any persons under the age of 18 to operate a forklift;
- For any persons over the age of 18 who is not properly trained and certified to do so to operate a forklift.
